Release Notes

App Store version history for Phogit, most recent first.

1.0.0

Coming soon to the App Store.

The first release of Phogit, a git client for iPhone and iPad.

Repositories

  • Clone public and private repositories over HTTPS or SSH, with an optional shallow clone.
  • Create a new local repository (default branch main).
  • Remove a repository from the list, keeping or deleting its files.
  • Share a GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket link, or an SSH address, to Phogit from Safari and other apps; Phogit asks you to confirm the clone the next time you open it.
  • phogit:// links to clone (after confirmation), open a repository, or open a file.
  • Clones, fetches, pulls and pushes keep running briefly when you switch apps, and are cancelled cleanly if iOS stops them.
  • Lock files left by an interrupted operation are cleaned up when a repository opens.

Files

  • Three file browser styles: Finder, GitHub and Sidebar.
  • The real working tree, with git status badges, a hidden-files option and sorting.
  • New File, New Folder, Import from Files, Rename, Duplicate, Share and Delete.
  • Repositories appear in the Files app under On My iPhone › Phogit.

Editor

  • Syntax highlighting for 19 languages: C, C++, CSS, Dockerfiles, Go, HTML, JavaScript, JSON, Markdown, Python, R, Ruby, Rust, shell, SQL, Swift, TOML, TypeScript and YAML.
  • R Markdown and Quarto files (.Rmd, .qmd) open and preview as Markdown.
  • Line numbers, find and replace, undo and redo, a coding key row, Save (⌘S) and autosave.
  • Previews for Markdown, HTML and Jupyter notebooks.
  • Image viewing. Binary files and files over 5 MB get an explanation instead.

Changes and commits

  • Staged and unstaged lists; stage or unstage whole files or single hunks; Stage All and Unstage All.
  • Diffs for every changed file.
  • Discard changes to a whole file or a single hunk.
  • Stash changes (optionally with untracked files), then apply, pop or drop stashes.
  • Commit with your Git identity (asked for on your first commit), and amend the last commit.
  • A merge tool for conflicts: ours, theirs, both, or edit by hand; a three-pane editor on iPad.
  • The merge tool’s Ours, Theirs and Both buttons stay on screen on short displays, even for a long conflict.

Branches and sync

  • A Branches screen: create, switch, rename, delete (with a warning before deleting unmerged work) and merge branches (fast-forward or merge commit). Phogit never overwrites uncommitted edits.
  • Check out a remote branch as a local branch that tracks it.
  • Add, edit and remove remotes, so a repository you created in Phogit can be published to any host.
  • Ahead/behind counts for the current branch on the sync button and for tracking branches in Branches.
  • Fetch, Pull and Push follow the branch’s upstream, and the first push of a new branch sets it.
  • Fetch, Pull and Push with live progress and a Cancel button; push to any remote and branch, with tags or force push (confirmed first).
  • Clear messages when a push is rejected or the remote has new commits.

Commit graph

  • All branches and tags on colored lanes, with HEAD, branch and tag labels.
  • Search by message, author or SHA.
  • Commit details with copy SHA; older history loads as you scroll.
  • Revert a commit (merge commits aren’t supported yet).
  • Load the full history of a shallow clone.

SSH

  • Clone, fetch, pull and push git@host:owner/repo.git and ssh:// remotes.
  • Create SSH keys on the device: Ed25519, kept in the Keychain, or Secure Enclave keys, which never leave the chip and ask for Face ID or Touch ID.
  • Copy or share a key’s public key, with links to the SSH key settings on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Codeberg.
  • Cloning an SSH URL without a key offers to create one.
  • Phogit asks you to check a server’s fingerprint the first time you connect, and refuses a server whose key has changed. Keys for GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Codeberg are built in.
  • Settings › Known Hosts lists the servers you trust; remove one to be asked again.
  • Ed25519 and ECDSA keys only. For servers that offer only RSA, such as Azure DevOps, use HTTPS.

Accounts

  • Personal access tokens per host for GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Gitea or any HTTPS git server.
  • Several accounts per host, with a default you can change, and a per-repository account choice.
  • A sign-in prompt when a server asks for credentials, with the option to save to the Keychain.
  • Sign in with GitHub, where available.
  • Credentials are kept in the device Keychain, this device only.

iPad and iPhone Duo

  • A three-column layout: repositories and sections in the sidebar, content in the middle, the editor on the right.
  • Hardware keyboard shortcuts in the editor.
  • iPhone Duo support: the tab layout on the outer display, and the split layout on the inner display when it’s unfolded.

Settings

  • Acknowledgements with each component’s full license text.
  • Diagnostics: crash, hang and performance reports from iOS, kept on the device, which you can share.

Privacy

  • No data collected: no analytics, no tracking, no ads. Phogit connects only to the git hosts you use.
  • Diagnostic reports stay on the device unless you share one.
